The Notre Dame Fighting Irish suffered its first loss of the college football season to the Cincinnati Bearcats on Saturday, with the offense sputtering after Jack Coan interception and failing to do much of anything on the day. Coan as a result has taken a lot of flack with fans, writers, and analysts alike calling for a Quarterback change. It may be time for one as the team starts to look towards the future and needs to figure out what they have in Pyne and Buchner going forward. But if youe expecting a drastic change in the offense performance simply by changing who under center, I would temper expectations. From what wee seen so far it would be unexpected for Pyne alone to elevate the level of play. It needs to start with the man who has somehow eluded criticism from the media, Offensive Coordinator Tommy Rees. Despite what our Twitter mentions might have said, this game did not get out of hand because of Jack Coan interception. It did keep Notre Dame from establishing the early lead but the win probability remained around 50% until Rees went ultra-conservative in his play calling against one of the best run defenses in the country (see below for more) Tommy Kraemer Jersey. Because of that, the game was essentially over by halftime, with the Irish digging a hole too deep for them to come out of.Before we get into Tommy Rees let take a look at the players on the field, specifically Jack Coan and Drew Pyne. Pyne did produce more EPA than Coan on the day so wel give credit where credit due. But a lot of that production came off of scrambles, with Coan losing EPA because for some reason Rees thought it was smart to call a QB draw with him in the game. If we only look at pass attempts (both QBs took 1 sack so wel call it a wash), Coan threw for 0.22 EPA/Play compared to Pyne 0.08. This isn to discount Pyne rushing ability as dual-threat Quarterbacks are very valuable. But rather the point is from what wee seen so far Pyne isn a clear cut upgrade over Coan from a production standpoint. When we charted the passes from this game Pyne did have some throws that would rival the best QBs in the country with his ability to fit the ball into tight windows. But he also had quite a few that were, quite frankly, bad from an accuracy perspective. At this point it unsure if this is due to a lack of chemistry with receivers or not, but take a look at Coan and Pyne completion percentages by Depth on the Field, and his low completion rate isn a result of taking a lot of shots downfield. In moving to Pyne, Notre Dame will go from a quarterback with average accuracy to one who would be one of the worst in College Football if he had enough attempts. Coan ranks 82nd out of 144 Quarterbacks in Adjusted Completion Percentage at 71% https://www.ndfioutlet.com/Sam_Assaf_Jersey-146, which adds drops to a player completion total and removes throwaways from their attempts. Drew Pyne has an Adjusted. Completion Percentage of 57.1%, which would put him in a tie for 143rd out of 144. From a clean pocket Coan ranks 77th with an adjusted rate of 74.8%, whereas Pyne would rank 146th out of 148th if he qualified. We expect those numbers to rise as he gets more comfortable with his receivers and the gameplan is built around him, but nobody should be saying for certain that Pyne elevates this team from what wee seen so far. This leads us to our main issue with the offense, the playcalling and the reluctance to accept this Notre Dame team cannot run the ball effectively.Above are Notre Dame stats from their first drive of the game https://www.ndfioutlet.com/Gabriel_Rubio_Jersey-102. The interception was obviously costly, as the EPA numbers success, but they were able to move the ball down the field successfully as their Success Rate indicates. We said in our preview the key to the game on offense was quick passing early and often, with the Bearcats having one of the best run defenses in the country. They also have an excellent pass defense but one that was buoyed by 3rd Down performance, so throwing early and often should be the way to optimally attack them. After seeing it work on the first drive, just with an unfortunate outcome, a smart team would have trusted the process over the results and stuck with the plan.Notre Dame was not a smart team on Saturday. On the next three drives, ending with the Tyler Buchner interception https://www.ndfioutlet.com/Jojo_Johnson_Jersey-132, Rees proceeded to call for runs on 10 of 13 early down plays. Only ONE(!) went for positive EPA and was successful. Coming into the game everyone and their mother knew Notre Dame could not run block to save their life, why on earth would it be a good idea against one of the best run defenses in the country, after you just passed your way down the field on Drive 1? Unsurprisingly, the Irish converted one 1st Down on 1st or 2nd Down during those drives and put themselves in 3rd Downs of 5, 6, 7, 8, 12, and 13 Yards to go. They would only convert twice. Even though it probably worth taking a long look at Pyne, this is why it unfair to blame all of the offense problems on Coan. Tommy Rees continually set him up to fail and completely overreacted to one interception. While Notre Dame does tend to run a lot more following their first drive, this was way off standard for them. When looking at 1st Half drives following their first possession and excluding Under 3 Minute situations, the Irish have run 59 times out of 103 early down plays (57%). Even when we only look at the first quarter, it 24 runs out of 47 early down plays. Quite simply this was a coaching failure, and why any progress the offense makes has to begin with changes made by Rees.Lost in all of the anger surrounding the offense is a good performance once again from Marcus Freeman and the defense. The Cincinnati offense didn do much of anything all game on a play-by-play basis as they were able to contain Jerome Ford and mostly limit Desmond Ridder as a passer. The two concerns from this game though are ones that were present last year: Deep passing and rushing quarterbacks. When the secondary and linebackers were able to keep the ball in front of them, Ridder looked like just another guy. But he completed 4 of 6 passes on throws over 20 yards downfield for a whopping 1.50 EPA/Play that put the Bearcats in scoring position multiple times. And when the Irish desperately needed to hold Cincinnati to a field goal to keep it a one possession game, Ridder ran the ball into the end zone to end any chance at a comeback. Frankly, this is probably something that scheme alone can fix. At some point players need to play better and with the team continuing to have the same struggles under two Defensive Coordinators is a signal that shouldn be lost. The system is working as the Bearcats overall stats on the day would indicate, it just needs some better execution. But honestly this is a lot of nitpicking when Cincinnati was giftwrapped two possessions starting at Notre Dame 8 yardline following Buchner interception and their 17 following Chris Tyree fumble. So be really glad Notre Dame has found another elite defensive coordinator, and hope that Tommy Rees can figure it out. The 2019 Army-Navy Game, or merica Game is fast approaching and both teams have finally revealed their custom uniforms for the contest Jacob Trach Jersey. Navy will be honoring their Heisman Trophy winners and powerhouse teams of the 1960s with a throwback look while Army will be paying tribute to the soldiers of the 1st Cavalry Division, past and present. And with the game just under a week away, I like to offer some insight as to what the game means from the two lenses through which Ie experienced it - as a fan, and as an athlete.A Rivalry as Big as Any OtherA vast majority of Army fans are bred, not born. I happen to be an exception https://www.affoutlet.com/Dane_Kinamon_Jersey-96. You see, most cadets and graduates from West Point grew up cheering for one side of an inter-state or other conference rivalry. Some of my closest friends from USMA are still huge fans of various other schools, such as Ohio State, Oklahoma, Iowa, Alabama, etc. Not me - my Dad was a 1990 West Point grad, so the phrase eat Navy rang through the halls of various duty stations I called home as I grew up, long before I arrived at West Point.One. More. Week. To me, Army-Navy was (and still is) just as big as Ohio State-Michigan, Alabama-Auburn, or any other big time college football rivalry you can name. I sometimes have disdain for fans who claim that their rivalry sn a rivalry anymore because their side has lost a few years in a row. I have this disdain because I remember staying up late to watch the Army-Navy game as a hopeful 10-year-old with my Dad in Garmisch, Germany and experiencing bitter defeat for 10 straight years before I even entered West Point (and watched another four losses firsthand). But, West Point does a fantastic job of inculcating Army fandom and a strong distaste for Navy in all of its cadets and graduates. From memorizing songs and cheers like The Rocket, Sons of Slum and Gravy, and On Brave Old Army Team to a slough of Army-Navy week festivities, cadets get fired up for at least four straight years before going on to smack talk any Navy grads they might meet in their future military careers after graduation. While my feelings and animosity behind the words eat Navy have fluctuated from pre-West Point to being a cadet, and now as a veteran, I feel that the Army-Navy game is truly unique. Part of that uniqueness is the fact that most players on both sides will ultimately go on to serve their nation in harms way, so I truly do respect Navy, their players, and their graduates. However, it a rivalry game - and both institutions are committed to producing leaders who will go on to fight and WIN our nation wars. So while respect is due, and players should conduct themselves with class during the game David Cormier Jersey, Army should play the way they will fight. That demands intensity, animosity, and violence of action. And that naturally bleeds into how Army fans act on the eve of the game. The respect is there, but you don win in sports or in war by being nice to the other guy. So, despite my pro-Army bias being held in check somewhat by virtue of working with Navy and Air Force writers here on Against All Enemies, I bleed black and gold and I will be rooting for Army to crush Navy for the fourth year in a row!A Part of Tradition and HistoryI was fortunate enough as a cadet to have experienced the Army-Navy rivalry from a second point of view - as an athlete. At the start of my plebe (freshman) year, I discovered West Point ACHA D2 ice hockey team, affectionately referred to as the lub Hockey Team. While it wasn the NCAA D1 team I had hoped to play for, the Club Hockey Team gave me an opportunity that skating for the D1 team never could - a chance to be a part of Army-Navy rivalry history.First-ever Army-Navy hockey game. 2013 at Annapolis.2012 was the first year that Army Club Hockey Team competed in the ACHA, and both of Navy hockey teams competed in the ACHA as well (ACHA D1 and D2). This paved the way for the first-ever Army-Navy ice hockey game in 2013. We took on Navy D1 team and despite losing 6-4, it was incredible to realize how cool it was to not just be a part of the rivalry tradition, but to actually make history. Being a player and actually competing against Navy also gave me a feeling of agency. While the football team lost all four years while I was a cadet, the Club Hockey Team could beat Navy and I could take pride in that. And we did. Playing for the Club Hockey Team afforded me the experience of scoring a goal at Madison Square Garden against Navy as a Firstie (senior). And after beating Navy D2 team twice, we finally beat Navy D1 team for the first (and so far, only) time in 2016. Army ACHA D2 Hockey Team celebrates first program win over Navy ACHA D1 Hockey Team in 2016.I love being an Army fan, and I will continue to watch the Army-Navy football game religiously https://www.affoutlet.com/David_Cormier_Jersey-97, but the rivalry is taken to a whole new level once you actually compete in it. Youe not just willing the team to victory from the stands, youe willing yourself and your teammates to victory during every shift and every second of the game. You lay it all out on the ice to sing second and carry the pride of having beaten Navy, your biggest rival, with you for the rest of your life.I will always treasure the memories and stories from playing on the Club Hockey team, but I will treasure even more my teammates with whom I beat Navy and made history with.Beat Navy!In case you haven noticed, I take the Army-Navy game and rivalry very seriously, and I far from the only one. In fact, I may or may not have rushed my wife and newborn daughter home from the hospital to ensure we made it home in time for the 2016 Army-Navy game (the year Army finally broke the streak). The rivalry gets crazy. Just as crazy as any other college football rivalry, and probably crazier in some regards.I imagine that some of the other writers here on Against All Enemies may have similar sentiments since a few of them also played and experienced the Army-Navy rivalry firsthand as athletes. One aspect that is special about the game and rivalry is that it not just about the two schools. They represent and pay tribute to the soldiers, sailors, and Marines serving in their respective branches. From uniforms to spirit videos during the game, it about more than just the game. That being said, Go Army Beat Navy! https://www.affoutlet.com/Haaziq_Daniels_Jersey-55 Haaziq Daniels Jersey

After a less-than convincing win against Cal last week, the Oregon Ducks face a tough challenge in the UCLA Bruins in a matchup that has major Pac-12 implications. A win brings them a step closer to representing the North division in the Pac-12 Championship, but a loss could majorly affect their chances on missing out. Reasons Theyl WinForcing TurnoversTakeaways, turnovers, whatever you want to call them, Oregon defense has lived and died by taking the ball away from teams this season. Oregon defense has struggled in their last two games against Stanford and Cal, and the fact that they didn have any takeaways in those two games isn coincidence. The loss of Bennett Williams can still be felt in the Oregon secondary, but this defense is still loaded with talented playmakers.Verone McKinley has picked off three passes this year, and Kayvon Thibodeaux looked like a man among boys last week https://www.odoutletstore.com/Deommodore_Lenoir_Jersey-89, and we all know what he can do when given the opportunity. Creating fumbles against Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Zach Charbonnet will limit the damage they can do in the run game and create more opportunities for the offense. [Chris Pietsch/The Register-Guard] / USA TODAY NETWORKPlaying Big in Big GamesSo hear me out on this one. We have all witnessed that Oregon has had an issue this season with playing down to their competition. Sure the box score against Stony Brook and Arizona look nice, but in both games it took a while for Oregon to get out of their own way and out the game out of reach. They should have beaten Stanford and they should have beaten Cal more convincingly than they actually did. But what game this year did the Ducks look the best? Their win over Ohio State. This is the biggest game of the season for Oregon since that win over the Buckeyes. Both teams are currently the best bets to reach the Pac-12 title game, but a loss would be a severe dent in each team chances of making the conference championship. These kind of implications make this game an absolute must-win for both teams and while Oregon has struggled against teams they should easily beat, maybe they also show up big in games against the better competition. Anything possible right?Baby Dye Continuing to Grow UpWith CJ Verdell out for the year, we all knew Travis Dye was going to have to step up to carry the Oregon rushing attack, and boy he responded in a big way against Cal. He led Oregon with 145 yards on the ground, averaging 7.6 yards per carry, and also led the Ducks in receiving with seven catches for 73 yards for good measure. QB Anthony Brown likes to run with the ball as well, but the rushing attack should start and end with Dye. Given UCLA impressive rushing game with DTR and Charbonnet, The Ducks are going to need Dye to be at his absolute best running the football if they want to match up with the Bruins talented duo.Finish the drive! Why Theyl LoseShootout, I Mean RunoutIt no secret that the strength of UCLA offense is it ground game. It kind of Chip Kelly style. Not to mention that UCLA is 5-0 this year when Zach Charbonnet eclipses 100 yards on the ground https://www.odoutletstore.com/Jonah_Miller_Jersey-127. If the Bruins dynamic duo get hot, itl be interesting to see if Oregon offense can keep up or if Oregon defense can slow them down. Oregon defense has been pretty solid against the run so far this year, allowing only 3.7 yards per carry, but UCLA running game will be the stiffest test that the Ducks have faced this season.Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY SportsPassing GameI know, I know. This has become a weekly gripe for Ducks fans everywhere, and it was pretty evident against Cal when the Oregon fans at Autzen started booing the Ducks offense. Don let Brown completion percentage against the Golden Bears fool you, he still won consistently attempt to stretch the field despite the plethora of offensive weapons he has to choose from. While Brown can shoulder all the blame for the loss against Stanford, he did miss out on a chance to show that he can be the guy to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. Let face it, at this point, Brown is who he is, and we know that. Unfortunately, that means that most Ducks fans don believe that Brown can be the guy to will the Ducks to victory if Oregon starts out slow as they have done this year and fall behind the Bruins. UCLA has the talent to run down the clock on offense, which would mean trusting Brown to make the throws necessary to win. That is a frightening thought.Bruins Brick WallEarlier I talked about Travis Dye and his importance in the win over Cal last week. He led the team in both rushing and receiving, and that pass-catching ability might be more vital against these Bears than it was against the Golden Bears given the stout UCLA run defense. The Bruins are allowing only 95 yards per game on the ground, which is good for ninth best in the country. If the Bruins continue their stout ways against the Ducks, that means Oregon will have to rely on the pass more in order to win the game, Not exactly comforting. Other than the win against Ohio State https://www.odoutletstore.com/Spencer_Curtis_Jersey-84, Oregon is lacking a signature win to hang their hat on. Unfortunately I don think that happens this week https://www.odoutletstore.com/Maceal_Afaese_Jersey-135. The Ducks barely held on for a win last year against the Bruins, and I think that what happens again this year. I think Oregon can still put a lot of points on the board this week, but I think UCLA will do the same.Oregon 35, UCLA 31 More FromAddicted To Quack Quack Fix 12-23-21: Lanning Staff is Coming Together! https://www.odoutletstore.com/Ty_Thompson_Jersey-147 https://www.odoutletstore.com/Cj_Verdell_Jersey-33

The potential 2021 Arizona State draft class wasn going to be as star studded as the 2020 class, but the the final day of the 2021 Draft saw four Arizona State pitchers come off the board. Left-handed pitcher Erik Tolman was selected in the 14th round by the Washington Nationals in the MLB Draft. Tolman, a redshirt junior, only threw 13.1 innings this past season after he was one of the Arizona State arms that needed Tommy John surgery. As a freshman, he really came onto the stage throwing 48 innings with a 3.38 ERA. Before the season was cut short in 2020, Tolman flourished in the starting rotation having a 2 Kyle Horn Jersey.50 ERA in 18 innings and a 30-12 strikeout-to-walk ratio. There will need to be a decision made by Tolman. He has two years left of college eligibility to use. His stock could he higher as his pitching arsenal is impressive, but coming off Tommy John he need to bet on himself if he were to return to Arizona State. If Tolman were to return he come into a smaller role to begin before likely heading back into the starting rotation. Meanwhile, the 17th round became the Arizona State round Ed Woods Jersey. Justin Fall, Cooper Benson and Tyler Thornton were all picked by various clubs. Fall, who was healthy throughout the year, was the first selection heading to the Miami Marlins. The redshirt senior took over one of the main starting roles after multiple injuries last season. The expectations set for him when he arrived to Arizona State were probably never achieved after ERAs of 5.68 in 2020 and 4.09 in 2021, but got the job done. Benson was a draft eligible sophomore. He had a lot of fans about being a high pick coming into the 2021 season before having Tommy John surgery. Despite the Toronto Blue Jays taking Benson 512th overall, it seems more likely Benson tries to use his three more years of college eligibility to raise his stock back up and return from injury. The Cleveland Indians took Tyler Thornton four picks after Benson. The St. Mary transfer filled the role of the Friday night starter last season and his 5.54 ERA is a bit inflated after he was asked to give longer outings to provide relief to the bullpen. Thornton has two years of remaining eligibility and seems more likely to return than not based on that https://www.assdoutlet.com/Dohnovan_West_Jersey-39. Willie Bloomquist certainly would get a boost if Tolman, Benson and Thornton all returned to Tempe. However, at the end of the day theye all young men who are so close to life-long dreams being achieved. Wel have any updates on their statuses as they come available. Moving right along through the schedule, the Deacs will be close to the end of their season with a trip to Death Valley to face the Clemson Tigers. Although Trevor Lawrence, Travis Etienne, and the rest of the competitive Clemson Tigers the past three/four seasons are gone, the talent level in Clemson, South Carolina continues to remain extremely high as the Tigers chase their seventh consecutive playoff appearance. Although earning a sixth consecutive ACC Championship and sixth consecutive CFP bid, Trevor Lawrence and Travis Etienne final collegiate season ended in a bitter fashion, getting shellacked by Justin Fields and The Ohio State Buckeyes. The Tigers had a fun season and even showed a glimpse of the future as the team battled with the COVID-19 Pandemic. The presumed starter for 2021, D.J. Uiagalelei, got a unique experience in the regular season against the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. A thrilling Double-OT game, Uiagalelei finished with 439 yards passing on 29/44 while also adding a rushing touchdown. All reports say that D.J. is ready to take the reigns of the offense and Coach Swinney is excited to see him play. Clemson will also have to replace Travis Etienne, a dominant and exciting playmaker. The successor to the touches are a bit murky still but for now, the senior Lyn-J Dixon seems like he will get the nod although Kobe Pace will definitely be in the mix. The Tigers also boast a pair of highly recruited freshmen in Will Shipley and Phil Mafah. Defensively, the Tigers actually welcome back a couple of real veterans taking advantage of the COVID-19 eligibility.
